How to Install Games from Disk on Steam

Game Information

With the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, many are flocking to their local stores or Amazon to buy the retail copy of the game. Most know that they can activate the retail game with Steam, but after typing in their game key, the game downloads rather than install from their disc. So I thought I would help out those on Windows looking to install from their disc instead of downloading on Steam while still using the Steam library.

  1. Log into Steam
  2. In the window, click on Add Game located in the bottom-left corner of the screen
  3. Follow the prompts and type in your game key usually located in the game manual or near/on the disc itself inside the packaging
    1. Once this is done, it will start downloading the game
  4. Pause the download
  5. Right click on the game and Delete the Local Content
  6. Open "Run"
    1. Windows key + R for most users
    2. Start Menu search box will also run the command in Windows 7
  7. In Run, type "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install D:
    1. This will change depending on which drive the disc is in, in this case it is in the D drive, so replace D: with your drive letter
    2. This will change depending on the location of Steam.exe on your computer
      1. Most on Windows 7 64 bit version would have to type something like this "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -install D:
  8. It might ask you to log into Steam, do that and it should start installing from the disc
